Cali, a French Bulldog, painted in oil as a royal portrait — the founding commission

01The transformation

This was a photo
on a Tuesday.

Taken on a phone in the garden, one-handed, with no setup at all. Good light and both eyes showing is the entire brief. That's Cali, our founder's own.

02The commission

Three movements,
phone to wall.

It starts with the photograph you already love and ends with something hanging in your hallway. There is nothing to book, nobody to brief, and your pet never has to sit still for any of it.

  1. A phone photograph of a French Bulldog in a garden, sent in for a commission
    The photograph, as it arrived

    The sitting

Upload any clear photo of your pet. One snapped on your phone is perfect. Good light, eyes visible, that is the whole brief.

  2. The same French Bulldog painted in oils, the approval preview
    The painting, sent to approve

    The painting

We paint them in oil and send the portrait back for your eyes only. Revisions until it is unmistakably them, at no charge.

  3. An oil portrait in a gilt frame, hung on a plaster wall in daylight
On the wall, three to five days later

    The unveiling

Printed on 400gsm museum canvas in Britain, stretched by hand, and boxed with corner protectors so it reaches your wall exactly as it left the atelier.

You see the portrait before we ever print it. If it isn't perfect, we paint until it is.

04The craft

A Pomeranian in Rococo court dress, oil on Inkpaw museum canvas

House study · Rococo court dress · 40 × 50 cm

Made to outlive the trend

The difference between a print and a portrait is what it is made of. Ours is built to still be hanging, unfaded, long after the phone that took it has gone.

  • Canvas
    400gsm museum-grade canvas

Heavyweight, finely woven, with a true painterly tooth, not thin photo-canvas.

  • Ink
    Archival pigment inks

Fade-resistant for generations. The reds stay deep, the golds stay warm.

  • Frame
    Hand-stretched 38mm gallery bar

Deep enough to read as an object rather than a print, and finished around the sides so it never needs a frame built for it.

  • Origin
    Printed in Britain

Made to order in a UK atelier and dispatched fast, never drop-shipped from overseas.

05The editions

Three sizes, drawn to scale

Every edition is the same commission on the same 400gsm museum canvas. The only decision is how much wall you want it to own. The canvases below are drawn at true relative scale.

  1. The Study edition, 30 by 40 centimetres — a Golden Retriever court portrait
    The Study 30 × 40 cm 12 × 16 in £69 Desk, shelf, or a narrow hallway run.
  2. The house standard The Portrait edition, 40 by 50 centimetres
    The Portrait 40 × 50 cm 16 × 20 in £99 Above a console or a desk. The one we hang ourselves.
  3. The Statement edition, 50 by 70 centimetres — a Beagle in naval dress
    The Statement 50 × 70 cm 20 × 28 in £149 Above a fireplace or a bed. Stops people mid-sentence.

All editions are hand-stretched over a 38mm gallery bar and arrive ready to hang. UK delivery is included. Preview before we print, on every size.

06The promise

Love it, or we make it right.

You approve the portrait before a drop of ink is spent, and every canvas leaves the atelier under our seal. If it does not stop you in the doorway, we repaint it or refund you. No return postage, no argument.

07The commission desk

Send the photo
you already love

One photograph is all we need. The one you would send a friend is usually the right one.

Daylight
A window is plenty. Flash flattens the fur.
The eyes
Sharp and open. The background matters far less.
Close in
Near enough to count the whiskers.

We painted Cali first, for ourselves; Sensei and Aya followed. No. 0004 is still open.

The photograph

Nothing is sent yet. Your photo stays on your device until you confirm the commission.

The size it will hang at

We paint first and print second. You approve the portrait before anything is sent to press.
